Gandhinagar sits right next to Ahmedabad, so the route to the Statue of Unity looks almost identical — but the extra distance out of the capital adds enough time that it's worth planning for, rather than treating it as an afterthought.

The Distance

Gandhinagar to the Statue of Unity is approximately 218 km, and takes roughly 4 to 4.5 hours by road. You'll sometimes see a claim of around 3 hours for this route — treat that as an optimistic, non-stop estimate rather than the realistic norm, especially once you factor in city traffic on the way out of Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad.

The Route

The most straightforward drive runs Gandhinagar → Ahmedabad → Anand → Vadodara → Kevadia/Ekta Nagar, largely along the NE1 Expressway and NH 48 corridor. It's the same well-maintained expressway used for the Ahmedabad to Statue of Unity route for most of the way, just with an extra 20–25 km added at the start to get down from Gandhinagar and clear Ahmedabad's traffic.

Our honest advice

This is a comfortable day-trip distance if you leave early — unlike the longer routes from Rajkot or further afield, 218 km each way is manageable in a single day. That said, staying one night lets you catch the Narmada Maha Aarti at dusk without rushing the drive back in the dark. Hotel Sai Inn from ₹3,800 per room is an easy, low-cost way to add that overnight.

By Road

Leave Gandhinagar by 6:30–7 AM and, allowing for a stop or two, you'll reach Kevadia by early afternoon. Self-drive or a hired car both work well since the road is good for almost the entire distance. Leaving much later pushes your arrival into the evening, which cuts into time at the Viewing Gallery before dark.

By Rail

Kevadia's own Ekta Nagar Railway Station (EKNR) sits about 7 km from the monument and has direct train connectivity, making it a genuine alternative to the drive if you'd rather not spend most of the day behind the wheel. Where there's no convenient direct service, connecting via Ahmedabad or Vadodara is straightforward. See our full guide to the Ekta Nagar railway station for platform details and train options.

By Air

If anyone in your group is flying in separately, Vadodara Airport is about 90 km from the monument and is the closer option compared to landing in Ahmedabad. Either way, our full how-to-reach guide covers every entry point in more detail.

Getting Around Ekta Nagar

Once you arrive, note that private vehicles aren't permitted inside the core attraction zone. Kevadia runs a free official AC bus shuttle network within Ekta Nagar, operating Tuesday to Sunday, 8 AM to 10 PM, roughly every 15–20 minutes, connecting parking areas, the railway station and hotels to the Viewing Gallery and other attractions.

Where to Stay, Coming from Gandhinagar

With over four hours on the road each way, a property close to the monument makes the most of your time on the ground: Tent City 1 (5.4 km) and Ramada Encore (5.7 km) both keep the walk from your parked car short, which matters after dark once the aarti and light show wrap up.
