Indore to the Statue of Unity is a manageable day's drive if you start early, and one of the more straightforward Madhya Pradesh routes into Kevadia — here's what the trip actually involves.
The Distance
A quick note before the numbers: Indore doesn't appear on the official list of cities with a published "how to reach" distance for the Statue of Unity, so what follows is our own research, cross-checked across several third-party travel and mapping sources rather than pulled from a single authoritative figure. Sources we checked put the driving distance at roughly 300–325 km, with the trip taking somewhere around 6–7 hours depending on traffic through Dhar and Alirajpur and where exactly in Indore you start from. Treat this as a planning range, not an exact figure, and confirm the distance in a maps app for your specific starting point before you leave.
By Road
The most common route runs Indore → Dhar → Alirajpur → Kevadia (Ekta Nagar), largely along NH 47. It's a reasonably scenic drive through western Madhya Pradesh before you cross into Gujarat, and at 6–7 hours it's very doable as a single push if you leave early in the morning — though stretches of the road through Dhar and Alirajpur are narrower and slower than a highway drive, so build in some buffer rather than planning tightly around the shortest estimate.
Our honest advice
A same-day round trip from Indore is technically possible but not something we'd recommend — 12-14 hours of driving in a single day leaves you exhausted and with almost no real time at the monument. Plan for at least one night in Kevadia so you can see the Viewing Gallery and the other attractions without rushing. Staying close to the core zone, like Tent City 1, cuts down on extra local driving once you've already put in the hours getting there.
By Rail via Ekta Nagar Station
Kevadia has its own railway station, Ekta Nagar (station code EKNR), built specifically to serve the monument and sitting about 7 km from it. There's direct train connectivity from several cities, so it's worth checking current routes and timings from Indore or via a connecting city — travelling overnight by train can be a comfortable alternative to a long day of driving, since you arrive rested rather than needing to recover from the drive before sightseeing.
By Flight + Drive via Vadodara
If you'd rather not drive the whole way, flying into Vadodara and covering the last stretch by road is a solid option — Vadodara Airport is roughly 90 km from the Statue of Unity, a drive of under two hours. Indore has decent domestic flight connectivity, so check current fares and schedules to Vadodara before deciding; this can work out faster overall than the full road trip, especially if you value arriving without a long drive already behind you.
Getting Around Once You Arrive
Private vehicles aren't permitted inside the core Ekta Nagar attraction zone. Instead, a free official AC bus shuttle network runs within the zone, connecting the railway station, parking areas, and hotels to the Statue of Unity and other attractions. It operates Tuesday to Sunday, roughly 8 AM to 10 PM (closed Mondays for maintenance, along with the monument itself). Whether you drive, take the train, or fly in, you'll park or arrive and then shuttle in for the last leg rather than driving right up to the viewing gallery.
A Realistic Indore Plan
| Day | Plan |
|---|---|
| Day 1, early AM | Leave Indore, drive via Dhar and Alirajpur towards Kevadia |
| Day 1, afternoon/evening | Arrive Kevadia, check in, catch the Narmada Maha Aarti |
| Day 2, morning | Viewing Gallery, Jungle Safari, Ekta Cruise |
| Day 2, afternoon | Remaining sights, begin the drive back |

Where to Stay, Coming from Indore
After several hours on the road, staying close to the attractions makes the rest of the trip easier: Tent City 1 and Ramada Encore are both a short shuttle ride from the viewing gallery, while Hotel Sai Inn is a more budget-friendly option if you'd rather put the savings toward the journey itself.
